I.  ITCC 1306 BEGINNING ROUTER CONFIGURATION (CCNA2) (2-4-3)                                                                                                                                                                                   52.1204

Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. Required prerequisite: ITNW 1325. Assessment Levels: R1, E1, M1.

COURSE IDEA OBJECTIVES:

Essential:      Learning to apply course material (to improve thinking, problem solving, and decision)

Important:      Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, or theories.

Important:      Developing specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by professionals in the field most closely related to this course.

SCANS (Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) competencies are integrated into this course competency-based outcomes to improve your education by helping you better define and use work place skills needed for employment.  Each competency will integrate several scans competencies to assist you in developing and reinforcing employable skills.  Competencies are criterion referenced (i.e., they are measured against predetermined levels of proficiency in skills for effective job performance).

The know-how identified by SCANS is made up of five competencies and a three-part foundation of skills and personal qualities that are needed for solid job performance.  These are:

WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES -- Effective workers can productively use:

Resources -- They know how to (C1)allocate time, (C2)money, (C3)materials, and (C4)staff

Information -- They can (C5)acquire and evaluate data, (C6)organize and maintain files, (C7)interpret and communicate, and (C8)use computers to process information.

Interpersonal Skills -- They can work on (C9)teams, (C10)teach others, (C11)serve customers, (C12)lead, (C13)negotiate, and (C14)work well with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Systems -- They (C15)understand social, organizational, and technological systems; (C16)they can monitor and correct performance; and (17)they can design or improve systems.

Technology -- They can (C18)select equipment and tools, (C19)apply technology to specific tasks, and (C20)maintain and troubleshoot equipment.

FOUNDATION SKILLS -- Competent workers in the high-performance workplace need:

Basic Skills--  (F1)reading, (F2)writing, (F3)arithmetic and (F4)mathematics, (F5)listening and  (F6)speaking.

Thinking Skills--  (F7)to think creatively, (F8)to make decisions, (F9)to solve problems,   (F10)to visualize, (F11)the ability to learn, and (F12)to reason.

Personal Qualities --(F13)individual responsibility, (F14)self-esteem,  (F15)sociability, (F16)self-management, and (F17)integrity.

II. ITCC 1306 LEARNING OUTCOME--JOB SKILL:

The student will identify and use network transmission media; explain the OSI model; recognize the primary network topologies/protocols, identify their characteristics, and determine which would be most appropriate for a proposed network; identify the functions of a network operating system and distinguish between centralized, client/server, and peer-to-peer systems; and distinguish between Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) and identify the components used to expand a LAN into a WAN.

Competency-based outcomes:

A.        Examine router elements (RAM, ROM, CDP, show).

B.        Describe connection-oriented network service and connectionless network service, and identify their key differences.

C.        Define flow control and describe the three basic methods used in networking.

D.        Identify the functions of the TCP/IP transport-layer protocols.

E.         Manage configuration files from the privileged exec mode.

F.         Identify the functions performed by ICMP.

G.        Control router passwords, identification, and banner.

H.        Identify the main Cisco IOS software commands for router startup.

I.          Check an initial configuration using the setup command.

J.          Log in to a router in both user and privileged modes.

K.        Use the context-sensitive help facility.

L.         Use the command history and editing features.

M.        List the commands to load Cisco IOS software from: flash, a TFTP server, or ROM.

N.        Prepare to backup, upgrade, and load a backup Cisco IOS software image.

N.        Identify the parts in specific protocol address examples.

O.        List problems that each routing type encounters when dealing with topology changes, and describe techniques to reduce the number of these problems.

P.         Configure IP addresses.

Q.        Verify IP addresses.

R.        Prepare the initial configuration of your router and enable IP.

S.         Add the RIP routing protocol to your configuration.

T.         Add the IGRP routing protocol to your configuration.

U.        Configure standard access lists to figure IP traffic.

W.       Monitor and verify selected access list operations on the router.

X.        Configure extended access lists to filter IP traffic.

Y.        Monitor and verify selected access list operations on the router.

To facilitate mastery of above listed competencies,  the instructor will be responsible for:

(1)        gaining student's attention

(2)        informing student of objectives

(3)        stimulating recall of prior knowledge

(4)        presenting new material

(5)        providing guided practice

(6)        eliciting performance

(7)        providing feedback

(8)        assessing performance

(9)        enhancing retention and transfer of knowledge.

Evaluation:

To demonstrate mastery of the competencies listed above, the student will be responsible for:

1.         Completing class project using instructional material and lecture notes.

2.         Completing required tests.
